Cancel Dammit!

Okay, so ice was bad enough. Now snow is coming around 12-2 PM tomorrow. They are predicting 6-12 inches. So what do our superintendents do? They sit and watch the news. This is what will happen if they don't cancel:

Teachers will chisel their cars out and kids will trek, probably only about half the students at that, into school. Around lunch time snow will start to fall and conditions will get bad. By the time they decide to cancel, the buses will already be picking up high school students and the elementary students, and teachers, will be stuck at school waiting for buses that are delayed 30-45 minutes. The last time this happened, I saw two buses stuck in the snow. Then teachers get to drive home in rush hour traffic and get stuck with the buses.

Here's how it works. I teach in an urban district. There are four major school districts on this side of state line. The superintendents either all call each other and decide to collectively cancel or, more likely, they try to show their "balls" by waiting until one of the others gives in to logic and cancels first.

Ugh, get over it. More than half the students won't come anyway, it's going to get bad while we're at school, and it isn't worth students and teachers getting stuck and in accidents. Just cancel already!

Edit: They finally saw reason. At 6:09 AM, after most of us were beginning to chisel our cars out to go to work if not already on our way. May the snow fall!

I always thought that snow was fun. Being in a country that has no 4 seasons, I look forward to every season (except summer since its hot here 24/7)...

But seems that snow is a problem to my friends who are living overseas.. :P

Well, more ice than snow where I live. But snow can if there is enough of it and it's the right type of snow. I just don't see a reason to make everyone go to school when you know conditions are bad. When I woke up this morning I seriously heard people's tires just spinning because they couldn't back up. But I've always liked snow. ^_^

Ice is bad. Not fun. :P

Is it a norm that pple don't go to school during winter?

Oh, no, we go. It's just if the streets are too dangerous they cancel, but we have built in days so we can miss some in the winter. If we miss too many then we go extra days in the spring.
