Today I shed a tear because I realized that I live in a world where a four or five year old boy will ask "daddy, why do american soldiers like to kill other people?" I looked at him and he stared at me with his big blue eyes. Eyes that saw a beautiful world before him and full of curiosity about how the world worked. I could see straight into his soul...there was nothing but innocence and love inside that boy, but now a small piece of it is forever gone. Just like that. I saw more destruction in that simple question than in all the wars humans have survived. I saw the reason this world needs peace, and the reason my soul is so compelled to fight to for it and to protect the children from wondering questions like that. The father ignored the question the first time, but responded the second saying they didn't want to but sometimes they had to to protect freedom. The boy was quiet a moment then went on about something else, but what he learned in that one moment was it was ok to kill, to hurt others and to take life and happiness from others. The world the boy once lived in has changed, and that is not what the children of this world deserve. In the father's silence, the boy's eyes met with mine, and we looked at each other a long minute...it was like his soul was asking me to explain, like it was asking me something much deeper than the stated question. I wonder if that little boy will remember the look on a waitress's face, the pain and sorrow in her eyes, and the tear that fell just after he asked that question when he is old enough to decide how he will live his life...
