As I hear the fireworks boom and see the colors light up the sky these are the thoughts in my mind and heart:

I wonder if the explosions sound the same as those from bombs.
I wonder what those pretty lights mean if you've just lost those important to you.
I wonder if this new year is bringing hope or only pain to those who survived any of the disasters the past year.
I wonder if all the people watching these understand and value their lives.
I wonder what would have happened if we took all the money that went for the fireworks and gave it to help those who are starving, homeless and devastated.
I wonder what the new year means to the survivors of war or a natural disaster.
I wonder if anyone else feels this earth and its people changing.

And inside I feel incredible lucky that I am here and well and those I care about are alive and well. And I feel lucky that we do not have to deal with the difficulties of bombs, war, disasters, or grief. And yet, I feel pain for those that do. And it angers me to hear the people talk about how awful these events are and yet they do nothing. Even if you can't get up and go there to help, you can do something. If you just sit and watch and say "that's horrible," you aren't sincere. And that goes for any situation in the past or the future as well as current events.

All this aside, I also feel a peace with life; a certainty that things will be ok and that this is just a passing phase. Like Sam saw as he looked into the sky in the depths of Mordor and sees a star...

"For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."
