So someone asking about betas in another community and it got me thinking. Not that anyone who reads this journal writes something they would want me to edit, but if anyone does I'm willing to do so...just leave a comment.

Whoa, self-volunteer beta! Im so keeping you in mind! :D

haha! Please do! I think it would be fun...but then I actually like grammar, so... ^_^

Sighs. Me = grammar mistakes. I wonder how I got an A for my english O Levels.... must be bribery from Singapore government.

Hahaha, nah. You worked for it, that's how. No one is flawless, and besides it's very different to use a language in a real world setting than it is an educational one.

U are so nice to me. *^_^*

Do you edit novels too, or is that pushing it? 'Cause I just finished my 50,000+ word first draft of a novel for NaNoWriMo last month, and I'm looking for people to critique it and find semi-obvious problems before I take part of it to some experts, so to speak, in a month or so...
akiko_kalla at 2005-12-09 08:41 (UTC) (Link)
sure, why not. But let me know what time frame you're working with so I can know if I can feasibly do it. Maybe send me chapters at a time? When I send one back, then send me the next. I don't know...I wouldn't mind editing it, but it's the logistics that I'd be concerned about. *tries to think how many pages that word count is* ^_~

Cool. :) In terms of breakdown, I've divided my novel up into 5 chunks. Each chunk is in the neighborhood of 25 pages single spaced, and of course about 10,000 words. Percentagewise, there are a lot of dialogue scenes in there, so a lot of it reads pretty quickly.

One dilemma I have, though-- at the moment, it's all "pure first draft" since I just have what I wrote for NaNoWriMo, and I scripted almost 30k words worth of that over about 8 days. So, first I'm sending it out to people (friends and family who aren't really writers) who can catch obvious problems, like plot problems and such. (There's actually a lot of plot for 50k words, hence more potential for pieces here and there that don't work that well.)

I've been reading through pages and marking little things I want to fix up (including grammar mistakes), so I still want to do another round of that before I share it with people with more writing expertise. Plus, the opening two scenes or so definitely need work, since I was still getting a hold on the overall feel of the book when I was writing those.

It's reasonably good for a first draft... but, yeah-- it's still a first draft... hence the debate about how much more I want to fix things up before I send the first part to you. Any thoughts on that?

I would say whatever you're comfortable sending me. I will be on break in a week and a half so I could go over most of it then if you wish. I would just email one chapter at a time. I correct grammar all the time at school, so it doesn't bother me to make obvious corrections and typically I will just put in parantheses what needs to be reworded. I can also give suggestions if you like, just let me know what you want. My philosophy...whatever works. ^_^

Ah. Was that my request? Thanks for acknowledging and volunteering beta use. I really need it.

It's nice to see another grammar nazi enthusiast. I'm actually kind of laxed in the grammar department with a few nitpicks, however I can never seem to pick out my own errors. It's sort of like how you could detect body odor on any other person, but never notice that you stink yourself.>_>

... shut up! My writing sucks and my conversational similes aren't any better. *shakefist*

I do have a NaNo novel as well, but don't worry. I won't be entrusting that monster to anyone else for a long time. But, if it's not too much trouble, I have a drabble to run by you, (Envy theme #5- "Kako"), just above 200 some words. Maybe I could mail it to you? :)

I'm posting this here instead of at your latest post, because it's related to the topic of discussion.
AOL's being mean, and wouldn't send my e-mails to you, and I just wanted you to know that the next chapter is up for editing at 3dwardx3lric on GJ. This should be the direct address: www.greatestjournal.com/users/3dwardx3lric/1411.html
I'm working on typing up #3, right now, as well.
